OPENING THOUGHT
“God does not just speak; He speaks for a reason.”
-God does not give us promises simply to make us feel good. When God speaks, there is an intention behind His Word.
-The Israelites had been promised a land, but there was a Jordan River between where they were and where God was taking them.
-The message is therefore about crossing the things that stand between us and God’s promises.
1. GOD KNOWS YOUR JORDAN BEFORE YOU GET THERE
Joshua 3:14–16
The Jordan was overflowing its banks. This was not an easy or convenient time to cross.
Yet God chose that season.
The important lesson:
The obstacle did not surprise God.
God knew the Jordan was there before He told them to cross it.
The presence of a Jordan does not mean the absence of God.
Sometimes we assume that if God is with us, there should be no obstacles. But the Israelites were exactly where God wanted them to be, and there was still a Jordan in front of them.
2. YOUR JORDAN IS THE THING BETWEEN WHERE YOU ARE AND WHERE GOD IS TAKING YOU
A Jordan does not have to be a literal river.
It can represent:
A person
A situation
A decision
A place
A difficult season
Fear
An obstacle
Anything that stands between your present position and God’s intended destination.
Jordan can be a place, a point, or a situation that requires a decision.
The question is:
What is your Jordan?
-There is a difference between where you are now and where God is taking you.
-The space between the two may require you to cross something.
3. GOD IS BRINGING YOU TO A PREPARED PLACE
God told Joshua:
Joshua 1:2
-God had already prepared the destination.
-The Jordan did not cancel the promise.
-Numbers 23:19
-God will not fail concerning His promise.
-The fact that you have encountered an obstacle does not mean God has changed His mind.
4. GOD’S PRESENCE MUST GO WITH YOU
The Israelites were instructed to follow the Ark of the Covenant.
Joshua 3:3
-The instruction was essentially:
-Follow God.Don’t run ahead of God.
-Don’t begin looking for someone else’s Promised Land.
-Don’t compare your journey with another person’s journey.
Ask yourself:
Is my Jordan God-made or man-made?
Am I following God?
Am I staying with God?
Am I trying to make God follow me instead?
The God who told you to go is still with you.
5. EVERY JORDAN HAS A REQUIREMENT
For everything we desire from God, there is a requirement.
This is not about earning God’s grace; it is about responding to His instructions.
Every spiritual height requires sacrifice.
What God requires from one person may be different from what He requires from another.
Therefore, don’t compare instructions.
Your responsibility is to obey what God has told you.
For Israel, crossing the Jordan required consistent obedience.
Knowing God’s promise was not enough.
They had to act on His instruction.
6. BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS
God repeatedly told Joshua to be strong and courageous.
Joshua 1:9
-Why did God keep telling Joshua this?
-Because God knew Joshua needed courage. God knew what was ahead.
-The Jordan was intimidating, but Joshua was not going into it alone.
-Courage does not mean there is no obstacle.
-It means you see the obstacle and still trust God enough to move.
7. YOU MUST TAKE THE STEP — GET YOUR FEET WET
-This is one of the key lessons of the crossing.
-The priests had to step into the Jordan.
Joshua 3:15–16
They did not wait for the river to become completely dry before moving.
They stepped first.
Then the waters parted.
Sometimes the miracle happens after the step.
We can want God to make everything clear and comfortable before we move, but there are moments when faith requires us to move before we see the complete path.
You must take a step in unfamiliar territory.
Until you cross your Jordan, you may not know what your Promised Land looks like.
Remember:
The current of the water is not more powerful than your God.
The circumstances may look intimidating, but they do not have the final word.
8. THE JORDAN IS A CROSSING POINT, NOT YOUR DESTINATION
The Jordan represented the boundary between where Israel had been and where God was taking them.
Therefore, don’t become so focused on the obstacle that you forget the promise.
The Jordan is not the destination.
It is something you have to cross.
Your responsibility is to:
Go with God
Obey God
Be strong and courageous
Take the step
Keep moving toward the promise
9. BUILD A MEMORIAL
After crossing, Israel was instructed to establish a memorial.
Joshua 4:6–7
Don’t forget what God has done.
When God brings you through your Jordan, build a memorial.
Remember:
What God brought you through
What He delivered you from
What He promised
How He made a way
What looked impossible but became possible
Years from now, you should be able to look back and say:
“This was the season when God brought me across my Jordan.”
THE MESSAGE IN ONE SENTENCE
God has prepared a place for you, but there may be a Jordan between where you are and where He is taking you; therefore, follow God, obey His instructions, be strong and courageous, take the step, cross your Jordan, and remember what He does for you.
